'BOYHOOD'

Louis O’Sullivan’s series BOYHOOD is an exploration of the feeling underlying moments of naïve freedom.

The photographer has previously featured on FAC with his Cruiser Clothing label, but this project is a more personal snapshot into the process of maturation. Through a series of portraits of youngfellas on the float, the photos evoke the phase in life where we become autonomous, but not yet responsible. For Louis, the collection is a reflection on the good times but also an acceptance that growing up - fulfilling ambitions and taking responsibility - is eventually inevitable.

Carefree cruises across the estate on a warm afternoon. Nowhere in particular to be. Four cans for a fiver, a pack of rollies between three of the lads, two skinners, chats about the night out last weekend. Old enough to buy drink, but not old enough to give a fuck. Elements of rebellion, but also camaraderie. New explorations of the surroundings. New explorations of the consciousness. “Yeah man of course I’ve used a bong before. Where do I light it though?

BOYHOOD leads us through a narrative of growth, drawing us from chill days out the back garden during a free gaff, to creative projects and new runners, then nights on cans of dutch around the corner shop. The series concludes with a flick of one of the lads and a van, with the DART in the background, suggesting that although the freedom of teenage years must end, the journey continues. We’re keeping a close on Louis as he continues to produce coherent, thoughtful and stylish pieces of art. Follow Louis on Instagram and enjoy the full series below.
