Francis Matthews - Oil Paintings of Dublin Streets
Francis Matthews is a visual artist working mainly in oil painting. His work focuses on light, architecture and the city.
The imagery he produces are nearly always absent of people, describing places of neglect or moments of silence in otherwise inhabited locations. These unoccupied places can be seen as empty sets, where a scene is about to unfold.
Francis explores locations by photographing them initially, finding compositions that involve how the the light works in the place. He uses the photographs to paint from; the application of paint, being deliberate and slow becomes an act of intense observation rather than overt expression.
